A used luxury car can be a smart way to get more features for your money, but these vehicles can also cost more to maintain and repair. Use this checklist before you buy a used Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Land Rover or similar vehicle in Toronto and the GTA.
1. Ask for the vehicle history report
Request a Carfax or similar history report and read it closely. Look for accident or damage records, number of owners, registration history and reported odometer readings. A report is a starting point, not a guarantee, so keep going through the rest of this list.
2. Ask about service records
Luxury vehicles are built for regular maintenance. Ask whether service records are available and when the last major service was done. Gaps in service history are worth asking about.
3. Get the full price in writing
In Ontario, a dealer must advertise a price that includes all fees and charges other than HST and licensing. Ask for the total price in writing before you commit so there are no surprises on the bill of sale.
4. Look closely at the details
Check the tires, brakes, panel gaps, paint, glass and interior wear. Test every feature: heated seats, sunroof, cameras, parking sensors, navigation and driver aids. Make sure no warning lights stay on after startup.
5. Take a proper test drive
Drive on city streets and on the highway if you can. Listen for unusual noises, feel for vibration, and check that the transmission shifts smoothly. Bring a list of what matters to you.
6. Consider an independent inspection
A pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic you trust can catch problems that a short test drive will not. It is a small cost compared with an unexpected repair.
7. Plan for ownership costs
