Winter driving in Toronto and the GTA is easier with the right vehicle and the right tires. If you are shopping for a used SUV or crossover this season, here is what to think about.
All-wheel drive and four-wheel drive
All-wheel drive helps with traction when accelerating on snow and slush. It does not help you stop faster, so tires and driving speed still matter. Ask which drivetrain a vehicle has and what it is designed for.
Tires matter most
Winter tires make a big difference in cold weather and on snow. Check the tread on any set that comes with a vehicle, and budget for a winter set if it does not include one.
Check heating and visibility features
Test the heated seats, heated steering wheel, defrosters, wipers, remote start and cameras. These features make cold mornings easier.
Look underneath and around the wheel wells
Road salt can cause rust. Look at the underbody, wheel wells and door bottoms for corrosion on any used vehicle.
Consider ground clearance and cargo space
Think about how you use the vehicle: school runs, commuting, winter trips or hauling gear. Compare crossovers and larger SUVs for room and fuel economy.
Frequently asked questions
Is an SUV better than a sedan in winter?
An SUV with all-wheel drive can offer better traction from a stop, but a sedan with good winter tires also performs well. Tires and careful driving are the biggest factors.
